3/28/2020 – These are some trying times for all of us, but food, fiber, and medicine production must continue. Many NC hemp farmers have fertilizer, seeds, and clones/transplants ordered and are prepping their fields. And many have questions and are looking for information about growing and selling their hemp. Extension is still here to help you.

Like everyone else, NC State University and the state and county-based NC State Extension personnel are operating differently right now. We are not in our regular offices or research labs and fields (with a few critical exemptions) but we are still working and here to serve you. We have our home offices set up, and with the use of online platforms such as our NC State Extension Hemp website, Zoom (for videoconferencing), Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and email, we can still provide great service to all of you. Extension specialists are in the process of creating new content for the hemp website and will be posting regular news articles. This is a great time for us to write up the research we have conducted over the past three years, so you will be seeing articles with those results. And we are also discussing holding some interactive Zoom webinars.

If you don’t know your county Extension agent, this is a great time to introduce yourself and find out what services are right there in your county to access. This link takes you to a list of all the county offices. Just click on your county and you will see what programs are offered and a list of the staff with their responsibilities and email addresses.

NC State Extension has created a website specifically for COVID-19 Resources that I suggest you visit and check back in with regularly. And some of our agents and specialists have created pages of resources specifically for the growers/clientele they serve. For example, Chatham county agent, Debbie Roos, has the Growing Small Farms website that might be of interest to many of our hemp farmers.

And I want to remind you to be creative in communicating at this time when social/physical distancing is so very important. With the use of our smartphones, if you have something you want to show your extension agent, you can send them a picture by text or email or have a videochat with them!

So let’s keep growing and stay safe at the same time. And remember, Extension is still open for business and wants to help you be successful.
