A delegation of Haywood County 4-H members attended the 73rd Electric Congress, which was held virtually this year.

The Haywood County Electric Congress delegation included: Johanna Carpenter, Arielle Carpenter, Angelique Carpenter, Abbie Ball, Skylar Ball, Extension Professional, Karen Ball, and 4-H Extension agent, Coley Bartholomew. Over one hundred fifty 4-H youth, adult leaders, and Extension agents from 39 counties attended the virtual conference. Youth attended sessions on: women fulfilling careers in the energy industry, power restoration, self-healing grid systems, solar facilities, Siemens Charlotte Energy Hub, offshore wind installations, drone applications, and energy careers; learning from 4-H alumni employed as Duke Energy Lineman and electric engineers.

The conference also included an awards banquet; in which 4-H youth were recognized from each of the energy territories in North Carolina: Dominion Energy, Duke Energy Progress, Duke Energy Carolina. Arielle Carpenter of Clyde received the Duke Energy Progress 2nd place territorial award for her three year electric portfolio work.

Since 1947, Duke Energy and Dominion Energy have sponsored the annual congress to emphasize electrical energy concepts, conservation, and safe efficient energy usage. 4-Her’s learned about electric careers, assembled electric kits, and built a solar car.

The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State universities.
