Henderson County youth have been busy “Falling into 4-H” this season through participating in a variety of Special Interest programs. From learning about 4-H fundamentals to building engineering and critical thinking skills, our youth have been actively developing important life skills and building valuable relationships.

Galactic Quest was the 2021 4-H STEM Challenge designed to explore topics including physics, engineering, computer science, and space agriculture. During the months of October and November, youth ages 8-14 met for four sessions to complete exciting, hands-on activities. The participants collaborated to gather space resources, learned about light refraction through building telescopes, worked in teams to decode mystery messages with ciphers, and engineered their own Mars rovers. child working on a projectchildren building a cardboard racetrack

November kept up its popularity through resuming the highly-demanded 4-H Sewing Classes. Students ages 8-18 partnered with wonderful adult volunteers for two sessions this month and will complete the remaining two sessions during the first weeks of December. So far, students have learned about different types of fabric, how to follow sewing patterns, and have begun creating their own sewing projects. Beginner students are completing a stuffed goose, and intermediate students are working on a cotton garment. Students also practiced hand sewing skills by making their own felt Christmas ornaments. Our volunteers are passionate about seeing 4-Hers succeed; they generously donate their time and expertise to help youth build sewing skills, confidence, and collaboration skills. child with ornament craft child with ornament craft youth and volunteers child working on project

The Cloverbud SPIN Club is a new addition to Henderson County’s 4-H program and is designed to introduce youth ages 5-7 to the many opportunities 4-H provides. Participants along with a parent meet monthly to learn about 4-H fundamentals through fun and interactive activities. Since the club’s first meeting in September, participants have learned 4-H basics including what the emblem represents, the 4-H motto and pledge, what ‘learning by doing’ means, and the importance of developing life skills. Cloverbuds have also built their creativity, cooperation, and healthy lifestyle skills through planting edible basil, painting pumpkins, and making healthy ‘critter’ snacks. This month, participants created grateful turkeys and played Thanksgiving Bingo.
