Conserving Biodiversity and Bird Habitat When Land Is Developed

SYNOPSIS: Opportunities exist to conserve biodiversity when land is subdivided for development. This workshop introduces participants to the key principles and practices required to conserve biodiversity during design, construction, and post-construction phases. Participants will also learn about an online evaluation tool, called “Building for Birds.” This tool allows decision makers to manipulate amounts of forest fragments (urban/rural) and tree canopy (in residential areas) and determine the best designs for conserving bird habitat. In addition, participants will learn about Onslow County natural resource programs and extension resources that can be used to create neighborhoods and individual lots that conserve natural resources.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:
1) To provide information and resources on key principles and practices required to conserve biodiversity and natural resources during design, construction, and post-construction phases of development.
2) To provide information about how to use an online tool to evaluate different landscape design scenarios and impacts on bird habitat during the breeding season.
3) To provide information about how to use an online tool to evaluate different landscape design scenarios and impacts on bird habitat during the migration season.

* Registered participants will receive a 126-page resource manual developed by Mark Hostetler and associated UF/IFAS personnel with detailed strategies and resources to help one to create communities that conserve biodiversity over the long term. Participants will also receive a certificate as proof of attendance and will be eligible for up to 3 LEED CE credits (self-reporting).
Biosketch:
Dr. Mark Hostetler is a Professor, Department of Wildlife Ecology & Conservation, University of Florida (UF). With over twenty years of experience in urban wildlife and green development issues, Dr. Hostetler conducts research and outreach on how urban landscapes could be designed and managed, from small to large scales, to conserve biodiversity. Partnering with policy makers, city/county planners, environmental consultants, and developers, he leads efforts to establish model communities that incorporate conservation design and management strategies that enhance urban biodiversity and minimize development impacts on nearby natural areas. Dr. Hostetler co-founded UF’s Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC) and collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and graduate students to foster green development projects nationally and internationally. He serves on the advisory board of URBIO, which is a scientific network for education and research that promotes urban biodiversity across the globe. He is the author of The Green Leap: Conserving Biodiversity in Subdivision Development, and he has produced and directed an award-winning TV series titled Living Green. He regularly contributes to several online blogs regarding urban biodiversity conservation and green development, including The Nature of Cities.
Dr. Hostetler has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Purdue University and his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Zoology are both from University of Florida.
