Join Madison & Yancey County 4-H for a fun opportunity to learn about chick care, handling, showmanship and more!
In this 5 month program, youth will participate in monthly workshops where they will learn how to raise, care for, handle and show their animals. The project will conclude with youth showing their chicken in the Madison County Fair!
The High Country 4-H Pullet Project is open to youth ages 5-18. Youth must enroll as 4-H members. Registration is open until April 8th, or until program space is full.
Getting started:
Register at go.ncsu.edu/pullet (participants must also be enrolled as 4-H members for 2024 at v2.4honline.com)
- Registration fee: $50 due via cash or check to your 4-H Office. Note: families with multiple children receive a discounted rate of $15 per each additional child.
- Participation Contract: Participants & Parent/Guardian must sign and submit with registration fee. (View/Download Participation Contract Here)
- Participants will receive 3 chicks (pullets) each, of mixed laying breed varieties.
- Youth are expected to attend ALL educational programs (see schedule below). Please mark your calendar!
- Youth must participate in Showmanship at the Madison County Fair!
- All participants are invited to a Program Completion Celebration.

- April 22nd, 5:30-7:00pm @ N.C. Cooperative Extension, Yancey County Center
- May 1st: Participation Fee Due to Your County Extension Office
- Week of May 20th, Date/Time TBA: Adoption & Scheduling Site Visits for First Time Participants @ N.C. Cooperative Extension, Madison County Center
- June 24th, 5:30-7:00pm: Chicken Trivia & Eggcellent Egg Contest Preview @ N.C. Cooperative Extension, Yancey County Center
- July 29th, 5:30-7:00pm: Handling & Washing @ N.C. Cooperative Extension, Yancey County Center
- August 26th, 5:30-7:00pm: Showmanship & Mock Show @N.C. Cooperative Extension, Madison County Center
- September 23rd, 5:30-7:00pm: Project Record Books @ Your County Extension Office
- September 26-28th: Madison County Fair Show, Times TBA
- September 30th, 5:30-7:00pm: Program Completion Celebration @ Yancey Senior Center
