Historic Barns Photo Contest Madison County has a rich history in the field of agriculture. An interesting way to trace our county’s agricultural history is by looking at the architecture of the barns. A committee representing many different groups has formed to document barns in the county that are more than 50 years old. To kick off this major project, the Extension Office and the Madison County Tourism Development Authority is sponsoring a Photo Contest. Entrants are asked to submit a picture of a barn built before 1960 and include some information about the barn’s use and building materials. There will be three age groups: 4th through 8th graders; 9th through 12th graders; and adults. There will be cash awards for each of those age groups of $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. The deadline is Friday, September 14, 2012, and the photos will be displayed at the Madison County Fair and be included in a traveling exhibit to the Library locations around the county after that. Madison County 4-H Summer Fun 2012!! Are you ready for summer?! School is almost out and we are getting excited for our 4-H Summer Fun Camps & Workshops! Take a look at all the fun we have planned: Buying Local - NC 10% Campaign The newest campaign to save our farms is to spend 10% of your monthly food budget locally. A family of four will spend on average $400 a month on groceries. Ten percent of that is $40 a month you commit to buying local food. That's only $10 a week! We're about to show you how you can save 192 farmers from going out of business and preserving these beautiful farms.
We have 8,000 households in Madison County and if each household (not each individual person) would spend 10% or $40 a month or $10 a week on local food that would total $480 (dollars) X 8,000 (households) = 3.84 million dollars a year! This money would give a $20,000 dollar annual income to 192 farmers right here in Madison County.
