Who can participate: Youth who are rising 6th-12th grade!
Summer 2025 Season:
What we’ll do:
- Learn to evaluate quality livestock for production and health.
- Learn about livestock husbandry, including nutrition and feed, pasture and hay, equipment, health and disease management, and more!
- Learn about careers in the agriculture, horticulture, and livestock industry.
- Get lots of hands-on experience at local and regional farms and research stations!
Did you know? Skills you gain through livestock judging and giving reasons can prepare you for careers including veterinarian, farm manager, teacher, lawyer, researcher, presenter, healthcare worker, and more!
Livestock Judging, Skillathon, Quiz Bowl & Agricultural Career Exploration
Mondays in May, 3:30-5:00 at Madison High School
- May 5, 12, 19
Summer: Mondays & Wednesdays in June-July
- June 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25
- (No practice week of July 4th)
- July 7, 9, 15 (Tue), 17 (Thur), 21, 23, 28
State 4-H Livestock Judging, Skillathon, & Quiz Bowl Contests
- Travel July 30; Compete July 31-Aug 2 at NCSU Campus/Beef Unit in Raleigh
Program Requirements: Attend majority of practices and compete at state contests. We understand that summer can be a busy season with camps and vacations, but we ask that participants miss no more than 3 meetings and let us know ahead of time if they will be absent.
Cost: $20 for the summer program, plus up to $200 for Livestock Judging Contest in Raleigh, Jul 30-Aug 2 (we will try to reduce cost through sponsorships; scholarships also available).
