Youth and volunteers were recognized for their 4-H project work and leadership at the annual Madison County 4-H Achievement Program this month. The mission of 4-H is helping youth reach their full potential through life skill development, and that was put on display as 4-H members spoke about what they learned and did through 4-H over the last year.

4-H’er Sage Ofsa, age 10, earned the Gold award at the West District 4-H Presentation Contest and Silver award at the State 4-H Contest. Youth were also recognized for leadership development and completing projects, including Babysitting; Dairy Heifer, Horse, and Pullet Projects; Shooting Sports; and Wildlife Habitat Education. Youth in each of these programs gave a speech from the podium about the impact of their 4-H projects.

Special Awards were given to 4-H clubs, members, and volunteers who went the extra mile. The SharpShooters 4-H Club received the Community Service and Best All Around 4-H Club awards for 2023. In 4-H, members “pledge their hands to larger service.” The SharpShooters 4-H Club did a landscaping beautification project at the Beech Glen Community Center, volunteered at the Beacon of Hope food pantry, and held a Shoe Drive for students in Madison County Schools. The Laurel Foxes 4-H Club made gift baskets for senior members of their community and Christmas cards for residents at Elderberry Health Care.

Bentley Gardner, Sage Ofsa, Raegen Caldwell, Ace Carter, and Eli Cody were recognized as 4-H’ers of the Year in their respective age categories, for their commitment to excellence in 4-H. Steven Marlor was recognized as the Madison County 4-H Volunteer Leader of the year for his leadership and incredible behind the scenes support of the SharpShooters 4-H Club.

The North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association recognized two Madison County leaders at the State Conference in Durham.

Paula Thomas (pictured below with Dr. Rich Bonanno & Dr. Misty Blue-Terry) was honored as a distinguished West District 4-H Volunteer Leader for her work as a 4-H club co-leader and helper in countless 4-H projects and camps.
